Can stores display food items on the floor?
I have a part time job at a gift store that sells candy and some other food items. Someone told a trainee to display candy on the floor if there was no room on the shelf. Is that some kind of health code violation? I've worked in other places that sold food and was told never to store boxes of food on the floor (let alone let customers see it there) we always used pallets or racks. As a customer, how do you feel about buying food displayed on the floor? Would that be a turn off or is it no big deal as long as it's in wrappers? If you guys say I'm over reacting I'll keep my mouth shut and leave it alone. If you say it's gross I'll go and move it. I think it's wrong.
Wrapper or no, it does not belong on the floor. I am a food safety instructor, and I teach in my class that ALL FOOD (I don't care if it's unwrapped, wrapped, in a box, bag, can or in a can inside a box wrapped in a bag) belongs six inches off the floor minimum. This is a health code violation. Pests that can eat through the wrapping the candy is in, can get to it on the floor, and even if you have none now, making food accessible to them is inviting them. Also, You have to clean the floor sometime. So you are either dismantling and rebuilding the entire display every time you sweep or mop, or you are sweeping dirt onto the candy. Fine, it's on the wrapper, but I have to touch the now-filthy wrapper to get to the candy inside.
And on top of that, I just don't want to eat anything that I saw on the floor.
