I recently bought a saab 93 turbo. The day after buying it the head gasket blew. Got that fixed but there was still a problem with the turbo kicking in.
A while later the manifold went , so replaced and bought a new catalytic converter ans sensor.
Still problems.
I decided to take it to another mechanic to take a look at who told me that someone had welded shut the wastegate , causing the pressure from the turbo back into the engine which blew the manifold and the gasket!
Why would the wastegate be welded shut?
Now looking at a new enging and turbo,through the damage of not knowing about the weld.
Simply put the wastegate opens when the desired boost is reached, not sure what your stock level is. So welding it shut would cram as much back into the motor as possible, Depending on the turbo size it could be alot. However I assume its a stock turbo and probably could only spon so fast. It definately is not good for the engine. Could very well have caused those problems due to excessive heat. So Someone did it to make a little bit more power, but it probably pulled so much timing it just made more heat than power. probably best for you to get a new turbo, grinding off the weld, would be tedious to get perfectly flat to seal again, and that turbo has seen a hard life already. I would do a compression test on the motor see if its still in good shape, and all the cylinders are within 10% of each other (should actually be 3% but I wouldnt fret if its got some miles) If its within 10% I would say the motor is still healthy.
