What's the update on the technology extracting Hydrogen from water to power a car? Where is that inventor now?
I saw an investigative report a few months ago, featuring a welder who was using technology he knew from welding to create a fuel system that could power his car with hydrogen. The car literally ran on a glass of water. I think this may have been on 60 Minutes but it absolutely blew my socks off in terms of what this promised as a revolution in engineering, not for just cars, but for all kinds of internal combustion engines.
I think this welder / inventer got snatched up and paid a handsome sum for his patented invention, and it was supposed to go into development somewhere. So I've been waiting anxiously for water-powered cars to come on the market, although I realize it may be years before that happens given how much revolution it will cause or create.
Or was this story really just a bunch of hype and there is no such thing as a water-powered car out there. What is the update on this inventor and his marvelous invention, if you happen to know the details.
Update: it was a hoax then, and it's still a hoax.
It's not possible, as it violates the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Basically, you can't get something for nothing.
But I guess an update has to mention that there are a number of firms selling addon kits for cars that claim to increase mileage by using the battery to electrolytically decompose water to H2 and O2 then inject that into the engine to produce added power. They are hoaxes, of course, as it takes much more power to to the electrolysis than you can get by burning the gases. But a lot of people buy them. The problem is that if you think you have a gadget to increase mileage, you tend to drive more conservatively, and that does increase you mileage.
