None of the wire colors I have correspond 100% with any of the answers on here. I have a new MIG welder and a new 30amp plug that has to be put on it.
The plug has four terminals marked W, X, Y and G (green) for the ground. The cord from the welder has a black, red and a yellow (with green stripe) wires. No green ground wire as the portable welder has rubber feet. The question is simply how to connect red, black, yellow w/green stripe to X, Y & W?
No I'm sorry but the male plug which is what I'm trying to wire has four prongs marked as mentioned W, X, Y, G. The female is a portable Craftsman 5500W generator with an existing 220-volt outlet & 4 110-volt outlets which won't be used at the same time.
(w) white should be neutral, (g) green should be equipment ground, (x) and (y) should be the two ungrounded, or hot conductors, if you look at the plug it should make sense..
Did it make sense? you don't need the (W) terminal, so you use (X) and (Y) and (G) (G) is the equipment ground, sounds like this is a 4 wire twist lock,, take the plug apart and plug it into the generator and take a tester and you can see what terminals are the 240 volt if you can't see the letters there very good, the g should be easy to see.
If you have a 240 volt welder this should be fine, should be pretty easy to see after you look close..
