Since I haven't tried fluxcored in years, I'm rusty. I've been doing a lot of mig lately welding uphill but,I need to know what the difference is in the technique. Does it weld the same as mig or is it a different process? This will be a visual and x-ray test. I know fluxcore is hotter then mig, so I'm not sure if I should use my Mig welding style, anyone help?
The 3 G is the easier, at least your not doing an Arkansas bell hold. Flux core, tells what you need to know, vs mig, the flux can build up between passes, or as you butter it in. The xray will probably done with Ir192, and a T film. The resolution will be on the film in the form of a penny. They'll be looking for wagon tracks on both sides of the fit up. Make sure your plates are down, tight against your back up bar. grind the bar down the middle prior to fit up, no oil, rust, slag, anything down the middle. Your fitup spot welds can leave trash in the weld, not all trash is a discontiuity of rejectable size or type, but still, get the spots clean,need to be lightly ground. The distance between the weld plates, is usually about the diameter of the wire. Carefull to not blow gas into your weld, a rejectable discontiuity would be porosity with a tail. or string porosity. Let the metal lose its gas, get adequate penetration, just enough to not allow wagon tracks, no bend test, so you'll be ok in that regard, gives you room . That first pass , has got to be in there clean. That pass is closest to the film, and anything in it will really show up. Bring your own gear, don't use the labs, it'll be screwed up someway. Also, get your bevels right. Hot is better than cool. Eat a meal for Gods sake. good luck. and do clean up the bevels too. Ps. some people grind off the cap, make the weld flush to plate, check with the tech about that. Never seen that do any good. and after all, it;s not a pressure vessel code, sect 9 or anything.
