Good Welder for 4130 Chro-moly?
I don't have much experience with welding, so sorry if this sounds stupid. lol
I was thinking of getting a Lincoln Electric Weld-Pak 180HD, but I didn't know:
If A MIG welder was the right one for the job at all
or if the weld-pak 180HD is good for .120 Chro-moly
What would you recommend? A MIG or TIG?
I dont have much of a budget..
ANY SUGGESTIONS AT ALL would be greatly appreciated!
Back in WW2 they use to weld 4130 with oxy/ acetylene. Mig would not be a good way to weld 4130. The tig process would be best because you will get better control of the weld and penetration. If you use a 4130 filler then I would recommend that you preheat and post heat. You can weld it with a mild steel filler but I would use a filler with a tinsel strength of 70,000 - 90,000. You need to really research this as you can cause yourself a lot of headaches. If you don't preheat you have the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement from the moisture in the steel. Post heating will give you a better micro-structure. If you are welding tubing, purging the tubes with argon would be good, actually continuous purging the back side of all your welds with argon is better. Remember clean clean clean use acetone to remove the oils on the metal. No alcohol, gas, or degreasing solvents that will leave a residue on the metal. (I know that I may have scared you but I just want you to research it before diving into it and get discouraged, I like to be well informed on any project I attempt to do)
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask!
Here are some sites to look at. Good luck!
