which is efficient to use 2 way motorized modulating valve or 3 way diverging valve?
which is efficient to use 2 way motorized modulating valve or 3 way diverging valve in a chilled water sysytem and if there are any sources for a comparison in price, long run efficiency for the system and installation cost for the related equipments such as VFD pumps etc..
From an operational point of view, a 2-way valve is more efficient than a 3-way valve, because a centrifugal pump pushes less water, and therefore takes up less load. If it is a screw (positive displacement) pump, you need a 3-way valve
On the other hand, at low flows there is a higher erosion on the centrifugal pump impeller and eventually more maintenance. You have to have some significant flow, otherwise the pump cavitates.
VFDs are complicated and expensive. Only if there is a continuous, all year round use is its energy saving use justified. I would not recommend it where there are seasons.
