Why is there no oil accumulation on lakes from boats exhausting under water?
With all the sources of hydrocarbons on our lakes (boat exhaust, gas spills at marinas, etc), why does it not accumulate to where we can see it? When I run my boat in my driveway, I can see an oil sheen in the exhaust water, oil is very slow to evaporate and because it floats, it won't go through a dam, so what happens to it?
It's there. It's just a very thin layer, so the sheen is not obvious. But if you go swimming in the lake, you will feel the irritation in your eyes and on sensitive parts of your skin.
