With the increase in natural and other disasters, what items should we be including in a survival pack to store away for use in an emergency? Wind-up torch, swiss army knife, etc. Ideas please....

Am curious about other peoples ideas as much as anything. Guess I'm thinking we all should have a box of somesort - just in case....
There's no one simple answer to this as there are many variables, and the best thing you can do is adapt a personal kit according to your own needs in life.
Ready made kits are available, but they're targetted at single men and for the very short term, so not of great use for everybody.
You have to decide WHY you need a kit - i.e. is it for flooding, for hurricanes, for droughts, for power cuts, or other disasters, etc, as this will determine the contents.
HOW LONG will you need you kit for? i.e. Do you only anticipate a very short need, or something for a fortnight crisis, or for a whole year in terms of a major catastrophie? You need to consider that.
Women need additional items such as sanitary wear, if they care for children then they need items for them too, if you have a special diet then that needs to be considered, people on meds need to account for these in survival kits.
There's a LOT to consider if you need to create your own kit that's going to be effective. The best thing to do is to study camping and survial websites, and to properly think about your personal needs and what's essential and what you could do without during a crisis, and then use all this info to create your own personal kit.
