What's the difference between DC TIG welding and AC TIG welding?
It's a Polarity thing. You get three choices with a TIG:
DC positive polarity, DC negative polarity, and AC.
If you're going to weld steel, you'll want to use DC. You have two choices. The big difference is the direction in which the current flows.
One way, the current goes from the workpiece, up into your electrode, which makes your electrode hotter, and the workpiece cooler. This is DC Positive. It is useful if you're going to weld something very thin, and don't want lots of penetration into the workpiece. But, you need to watch that you don't burn up your tungsten.
The most common setting for DC TIG of steel, is DC Negative (or straight) polarity. This setting concentrates the heat into the workpiece, and gives you better penetration, and less chance of frying your tungsten.
AC, or Alternating Current, is best for welding aluminum if you're going to use a TIG welder. Alternating Current is just that: it alternates from Positive to Negative 60 times per second. This back and forth flow creates a cleaning effect on non-ferrous metals, that combats the fast-forming oxide that can mess up your welds.
So, DC Negative = more heat into workpiece, deeper penetration. Standard setting for steel
DC Positive = more heat into electrode, less penetration, best left for thin metal.
AC, best for non-ferrous metals, like aluminum, because the back and forth flow provides cleaning action.
