The cost of laying pipe is $200,000 per km over land to a point P on the north bank and $400,000 per km under the river to the tanks. To minimize the cost of the pipeline, how far from the refinery should P be located?
Seriously? Did you even try? no matter what they are spending $800,000 for the crossing of the river, since the river is straight, either the refinery is directly hooked to the underwater pipe or the tanks are connected directly. Since you have to go 7km P might as well be at 7km for another 1,400,000. Your other option is P=0, so you have pipe from refinery to other side of river, and then 7 km to go to tanks.. same result financially.
