Sulphuric acid is manufactured by the Contact process,one stage of which involves the reaction between:-?
Sulphur dioxide and oxygen: 2SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ 2SO3(g) ΔHf = – 197 kJ mol-1
Use Le Chatelier‟s Principle to predict what temperature and pressure (high or low) are
required to produce a high yield of SO3 explaining your reasoning.
Can someone kindly help me with this please, I don't understand how to explain this.
By Le Chatelier's Principle, when a system is at equilibrium, if one of the conditions changes, the equilibrium point will move in such a way as to cancel out the change.
2SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ 2SO3(g) ΔHf = – 197 kJ mol-1
Since ΔHf is negative, the formation absorbs heat. So, if we offer more heat to the system (i.e. we increase the temperature) the equilibrium point will move to absorb this heat, producing more SO3.
We can also see that the reactants take up 3 volumes, while the products take up 1 volume. Since pressure and volume are inversely proportional, increasing the pressure will cause the system to move to a state of diminished volume, producing more SO3.
To produce a high yield of SO3 we need high temperature and pressure.
