-I've got a question for chemistry which asks me how sodium hydroxide solution would be classified. I think it would be an alkaline since an alkaline is a base dissolved in water or solution.
The next question asks me how i would demonstrate (in an experiment)that sodium hydroxide should be classified thus.It maybe simply by showing how the substance neutralises acids but that cannot prove whether it is an alkaline or a base.
Alkalis are bases which are soluble in water. Many bases do not dissolve in water and will not change the colour of indicators, however since solid sodium hydroxide is nasty stuff, very corrosive especially in your eyes and dissolves exothermically in water( You probably have only been allowed to use sodium hydroxide as a solution) An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide turns red litmus blue - one of the earliest ways alkalis were recognised over 200 years ago. Alkaline solutions like sodium hydroxide also feel soapy when you rub a drop between your fingers- they form soap with the fats in your skin.
Even in Roman times they made soap from wood ash and fats or oils. Wood ash contained potash-potassium hydroxide- an alkali like sodium hydroxide-also known as caustic soda and used in soap making for over 200 years.
Bases including alkalis form salts when they neutralise acids, but insoluble bases eg CuO, ZnO, are simply added to an acid in excess and the undissolved base is just filtered off. To neutralise an acid with an alkali you need to add the alkaline solution from a burette, a bit at a time testing drops until you get aneutral solution
