Best way to clean deer skull cap for mounting?
plan on mounting a deer horns how do i clean before i mount
Saw the skull cap off of the head by cutting across and straight down about midway or just slightly behind the eye sockets. Then saw from a 90 degree angle starting at the back of the head being very careful to saw straight and level toward the cut you made near the eye socket. Using a sharp knife, a pliers, and a flat screwdriver, pry the skin away from the skull cap and from around the base of the antlers. (That's where the screwdriver comes in most handy.) Once you have cleared the hide from the cap, use the sharp knife to trim away any flesh and tissue still remaining. Then place the antlers in a kettle with just enough water to cover the cap, but not so much that it also immerses the antlers. To the water, add about one half to one cup of Arm & Hammer Laundry Detergent. (It has to be A & H so don't try this with any other brand.) The detergent is repackaged/relabeled and sold to the taxidermy industry as a product called "Sal Soda" which is used expressly for boiling skulls of all kinds. The detergent turns the flesh on the skull into a jelly-like substance which will boil or rinse away. Watch the skull to see how quickly this process is working. When you can rinse off the last of the flesh, the skull is ready to remove and allow to dry in a sunny or warm location. Bleaches in the detergent take care of the bleaching process so you don't have to worry about bleaching formulas with hydrogen peroxide, chlorine bleach, etc. This IS the way professional taxidermists boil skulls. Try it, I'm sure you will like how easy it is to use.
