Rod Fuming
1990 pontiac firebird backfiring out the exhaust on deceleration. It is a 305 tpi automatic.?

Here are the things i have done so far. Replaced spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. checked the air injection valve and air pump. Checked the timing. no obvious exhaust leaks before the cat convertor. The car does reek of fumes, smokes and runs a little rough on cold start up. I have been told it could be a bent push rod or valve. Any advise before i start leaning that way????? Thanks ~ Kurt ~

GSD is dead on, the fuel pressure regulator is a very common issue with those TPI engines. I had to replace this once on my first TPI Firebird, twice on the second one. What happens is pin-hole develops internally, and they leak gas into the engine when not running. Thats why it runs like crap when you start it...its flooded. also why it backfires, because too much fuel is getting past the regulator and igniting in your exhaust. This is the round thing under the plenum, in front of the dist and between the runners. Pull the vacuum line off after its run than sat a few minutes, even a drop of fuel means it's shot. You may have to check it a few times to catch it,they can be tricky like that. You'll have to loosen the runners at the intake, and remove the plenum to access. Use a GM part on these or you'll be doing it again soon. I'd get a manual, a few of those lower runner bolts are almost impossible to find, and you'll need special torx screws to get the regulator cover off.
