When buring a glass rod, what is the black substance on the glass?
...And how is it related to the yellow flame?
The yellow flame can be sodium from the glass or heated carbon from a gas flame that has too much gas and not enough air. If it is leaving a black mark, then it is the latter and some of the carbon is chilling out on the glass instead of burning with the oxygen in the air.
