Can I use teflon tape when replacing a water heater relief valve, or do I need to use pipe dope.
Yes. Teflon tape and pipe dope compound are both lubricants to help the threads seat completely. They do not actually "seal" the joint. Not using one or the other could keep the threads from seating properly, so one should always be used.
