How do you record drums?
I know you have to have a mic and mixer but what is the whole process?
That depends on how extensive your setup is. In the most basic setup the mics would go into separate channels on the mixing board and then you would come out of the stereo or mono output of the board into a multi-track recorder, or sound card if using a computer as your recording device. I would use a Shure SM57 on the snare and each tom, a condenser mic like a Shure SM81 for hi-hat and/or overhead, and something like an AKG D112 for the bass drum. The snare and tom mics are placed on top of the drum usually 4 - 6 inches from the top head. The hi-hat may pick up fine from the snare mic but if you use a separate mic I would place it about 6 inches from the top hi-hat (at the outer edge of the cymbal). The overhead mic should be directly centered over your noggin and set fairly high. Obviously you don't want your head to hit it when you stand so placing it about a foot above you when standing is a good rule of thumb. The bass drum mic is trial and error. To get a good sound you need a hole in the front bass head just big enough to get the mic inside of the shell. I usually place between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way inside the bass drum. Placing it closer to the batter head (back head) will give you more attack from the beater, while placing futher away from the batter gives more "boom". You just keep adjusting until you get the sounds you;re after. Other than that just hit record and start playing. You can adjust the levels between each drum as needed at the mixing board.
