How do I make potassium hydroxide from hard wood?
I want to make this from scratch, no chemical's, please! My goal here is old fashioned lye/fuller's soap. Thanks!!!
The old-fashioned way was to burn the wood completely then collect the ashes. Extracting the ashes with water dissolves the potassium hydroxide. Boiling the water after the extraction concentrates the potassium hydroxide. Adding fat to the concentrated potassium hydroxide makes soap by the chemical process called saponification.
