i am having trouble with consistancy, top and sides look great bottom looks horrible! is there some type of rest i can make to lean on, or some trick to beable to see better, or some way to find a more comfortable position? and also i go the same speed all over and the bottom weld sags.........thanks
I've been pipe welding for years now all 100% xray tested , never failed one yet. many beginers have your problem. first off stop using 332 rod... i know you are. this size rod is too cold, to push up the material, against gravity. use 1/8 , even if you switch back for the rest. also turn up the inductance or arc force, just for the over head, about 75%, then turn it back down about 30% for the other three positions. stagger your start- stopsstarting in the same place everytime can quickly build into a grape or over fill, you should have about an 1/2 inch at the bottom to start in, and my last tip is stay tight your rod should be right against the pipe, for fill and cap and trying to push through a open root. when i di that my rod is litterly bending as i push into the open root.being under the pipe it's hard to see the puddle so many make the mistake of long arcing in order to see better get over to the side alittle if you need to see, but you must stay tight or it's going to look like ass, and you should be going faster across the over head, this will help smooth it out. i wish i could show you i've train lots of aprentices to weld pipe. remember pipe is wear the real money is in welding, that should be your motivator. and tig pipers get the most so you might look into getting your tig stainless pipe too.
