trivia for instrument rated pilots?
1) If ATC tells me to proceed on course or resume own nav, are they directing me to fly the route that I filed or the route that they assigned to me (if it is different)?
2) If I have GPS and am doing an approach that is NOT a GPS Overlay approach, at what point must I switch from GPS nav to VLOC? For example, if I'm flying a VOR/DME arc, can I use the GPS to navigate until I turn onto final? What about if the missed approach procedure requires an NDB hold, but I don't have an ADF? Can I use the GPS to fly the published missed approach (switch from VLOC nav to GPS nav as soon as I go missed)?
If able, include any applicable FARs/AIMs in your answer.
1) The route you filed is not necessarily the same route you receive in your clearance so you ALWAYS take the route you have been cleared to fly. No exceptions. "Own navigation" or "proceed on course" simply means they are finished vectoring you. It's now up to you to get where you're going.
2a) In your example, if your GPS is a non-WAAS receiver (only approved for enroute navigation) you are required to use the VOR/DME as your primary means of navigation on any segment of a published approach from the IAF to the MAP, but you can back it up with GPS. In practice most pilots rely on the GPS, but legally, if the two disagree, you have to follow your primary Nav information. If your GPS is approved for IFR approaches (WAAS), then no problem, you can use GPS as your primary navigation tool for all non-precision approaches but it is wise to back it up with everything else you have.
2b) Most aircraft with autopilots and flight directors will automatically switch from GPS navigation mode to localizer mode for a precision approach. It's tied to the Nav frequencies in the VOR receiver. When you dial up a localizer frequency, it kicks you out of GPS nav mode automatically. On a non-precision approach you typically have to switch it manually though if you have a non-WAAS box. This can be one of those "gotchas". If you have a WAAS certified GPS with an up to date datbase there's no reason you have to switch.
2c) As long as your GPS is approved for at least enroute IFR navigation, then yes, you can substitute GPS for any published fix that is not between the IAF and MAP, so you can use it to get to your missed approach fix defined by the NDB. You can also substitute GPS for required DME data even on a precision approach.
3) I think you might not understand fully what is meant by "GPS overlay approach". To repeat what I said above, GPS equipment may be used to fly all non-precision approaches, except LOC, LDA, and SDF procedures. Flying any published non-precision approach using GPS is called a "GPS Overlay". If the approach is in your GPS database, the database is up to date, and you have a WAAS-certified receiver, you can do the approach with no ground based navigation facilities required.
