Will newer sewing machine parts work for an older machine?
I have a Sears Kenmore Sewing Machine the older one, and I need some feet for it, also cam pattern discs, and more. Some of the stuff I need on the Sears Part Direct isn't there since it is older. Will parts from a newer machine work?
The thing that is most important is the foot (zigzag foot, straight stitch foot, etc).
If it's just feet, then chances are that you can find some that will work at just about any sewing machine repair shop, many fabric stores and a lot of online shops.
Things you'll need to know: Model number for your machine, which will be of the format 123.456789
The first three digits tell you the company that made the machine for Sears:
• 117 – White Sewing Machines (most USA, a couple of models made in W. Germany)
• 119 - unknown
• 120 – New Process Gear (div. Of Chrysler) (USA)
• 516 – Gritzner Kaiser (West Germany)
• 158 – Jaguar/Maruzen (Japan mostly a few in Taiwan)
• 148 – Soryu (Japan)
• 340 – Necchi (Italy)
• 385 – Janome (Taiwan)
and the part after the decimal tells you the Sears model number.
The other things you need to know are the type of foot (long shank, short shank, snap on) and the maximum width of the zigzag stitch on the machine. If you're shopping in person, the easiest thing is to take along an existing foot or the machine.

Feet, belts, bobbin winder wheels, bobbins, lightbulbs are rarely brand or model specific enough to have to worry about never being able to find them again. The problems with defunct sewing machine models mostly start when you're after internal parts.
If you don't have a good sewing machine repair shop locally, I suggest dropping a note to Ron Anderson at A1 Sewing -- I've "known" him on the net for years, and watched his advice help a lot of people. http://www.a1sewingmachine.com/
