Hubby left his grass blower which leaked oil sitting on the porch and now we have a large oil stain. He says its oil that leaked but you can smell the gas too. I dont want the pets getting into it when they go out and I let the cats sit out there with a gate up in warm weather. I'm afraid they may lick at it.
Start by coating the stain with a cheap cat litter, the icky clay stuff. Let it sit over night, then sweep up. It will adsorb the oil and gas on the surface, without making a toxic situation worse.
Then scrub the stain with Dawn dish soap and hot water.
Once you can't smell the gas and oil any more, that is all you can do for now. You may still have some discoloration, but you'll need to wait to sand down the deck and re-stain it. The heat generated with sanding could cause a fire if you sand too soon.
