i have a miller big 40. it is an older machine and i am not much of a welder. i accuired this machine for free from a friend. i would like to use this machine as a home generator. i do not wish to keep this thing a welder just a generator. how can i squeze every bit of energy from this machine for this aplication.
There really isn't much you can do to that welder as it is to get any more power out of it. It has two separate coils, one for a.c. power, and one for welding power. The welding coil is designed for welding and has a much lower output voltage at a higher amperage. The a.c. coil is designed to provide a.c. voltage at 110 volts and roughly 3500-4000 watts continuous power output. It may also have a 220 outlet, but i can't recall any of the older ones that had that. Most of the ones I remember using had only 110 volt outlets.
As to removing the the welding portion to improve efficiency or increase output, that's not really practical as both rotors are mounted on a common shaft. Besides, when you're not using the welding part of the welder, you're not using any extra power from the engine other than the associated friction losses which would be small. It 'may' be possible to rewind the welding coil for a.c. power, but i really doubt the geometry would support it, and if it was it would probably cost you more than it would be worth.
The problem is that this machine is designed to be a welder first, and only meant to provide auxiliary power. It would be pretty inefficient to run that large engine and only get 4000 watts of output power. You may be better off selling the welder and using the money to buy yourself a generator.
