Hi, i got the arc welder 2 years ago and tried it a few times but its been a long time since i had it out and cant find the manual that came with it. I'm now worried that i may cause damage to it or myself by pluging the leads in the wrong ports,
you can tell by this that I'm just starting out so any info you may give will be of great help,
the clamp goes to the - port , it is the ground. turn your amps down as low as is allowed for the welding rod size you are using.
make sure your mask is down and slowly lower the rod to the workpiece.
at about 1 quarter to 1 eighth of an inch gap between rod tip and workpiece you should get a nice flare at the tip of the rod. if not , turn up the amps a little at a time until you do.
you now have the correct amp setting for a perfect weld instead of whacking up the amps and making a weld like bird droppings.
make sure also that you have the correct rods for the job you're doing ...mild steel for general welding of light iron and the correct size rod for the thickness of material you are welding.
rest the end of the rod on your left hand as if hitting a pool ball , move the rod side to side using your left hand to steady it as you work along your welding " run ".
picture a pendulum and count 1 , 2 ...1 , 2 .....as you draw the rod along , you are aiming to make a shallow u shape as you move the rod to give a perfect weld.
also make sure the pieces to be welded are as clean as possible , a good wire brushing on rust or a grinder on old paint will give a better weld .
practice on an old piece of iron just doing straight runs until you get it right , and weld flat ( horizontal ) as vertical runs require a great deal more skill.
if you are using old welding rods , put them in a warm stove for 15 minutes before you use them , any moisture or salting will dissapear and they will weld a heap better.
one last tip , if you don't have a steady hand and find it hard to keep the tip of the rod where you want it , snip the rod in half and use both halfs. the shorter rods will be much easier to control.
