We have recently bought an apartment with an open kitchen?
We have recently bought an apartment. In the part of the world we live in the american style open kitchen isnt much accepted, also the cooking that we do is more spicy and the fumes tend to go into the living room.We thought of an extractor but what other cost effective ways can be used to hide the huge open space of the kitchen so that visitors dont peek in???We have wooden cabinets for crockery and granite base on the them. The kitchen isnt all that big and has a small laundry area outside which we intend to use for cooking in the meantime.Your opinions will be important.........
As for hiding your cooking odors that is near impossible. A solution to help mask the odor is to burn candles, something that I do daily.
For concealing your kitchen to your guests I think one would like this concept in small spaces. It allows your guests to mingle with you while you are preparing the food.
If it is more of an issue of them seeing the mess from preparing the meal then use your laundry area to temporally house your dirty dishes. Out of sight out of mind.
If your are adamant on closing off the kitchen then consider a woven blind. Be sure that the blind is of equal size or a bit larger than the kitchen area itself. Attach the blind to the ceiling and when you want to close off the kitchen pull the blind down.
Another option is to have folding screens make. They can be made form old bi-fold doors, shutters or flat panels. They can be finished any way that you desire. Not only are the functional but they would add color and texture to the space.
