Has anyone ever had fluid drained from their knee? Was it painful? Did it end up helping you in the longrun?
I recently had ACL replacement surgery, and there's about 10CCs of excess fluid in the knee joint. My doctor suggested draining it, but I opted to let it subside by itself. Now, I'm considering draining it. I'm going to consult my doctor about this, but I'm just curious if anyone else has done this. Did it help to relieve pressure? Was it painful to have it done?
Thanks
A while ago, I had secondary arthritus after an extremely bad case of food poisoning. My ankle joint, and then my knee joint, swelled up with fluid, making them extremely painful and impossible to use. The fluid in my ankle joint subsided by itself, but I needed to have my knee joint drained. Twice.
It fixed the problem. After the second time, it only swelled up a little, and then went away by itself. After a few months, I was almost back to my old self again. Without having it drained, it would never have gone away.
It was, however, very painful and very uncomfortable. The needle they used was far too large for anyone's liking, and I could feel it under my kneecap. I could feel it moving every time my knee involuntarily moved. To be honest, it was one of the least pleasant experiences of my life.
But, at the end of the day, I'd far rather endure about ten minutes of extreme discomfort then endure month after month of my swollen knee. The benefits were almost immediate and there were virtually no side effects (just a bit of aching where the needle had been).
I know it's a different situation, but I'm assuming the actual draining would be more or less the same. It's uncomfortable and painful - with brass knobs on - but it was worth it, and it was over pretty quickly.
