Locomotives in multiple unit operation question?
When a Train is set up for a haul, does the type of locomotives matter when they're MU'd?
EXAMPLES:
Does whether the prime mover is a roots blower or turbo charged matter?
Does the gearing between motor and axle matter?
Does EMD, GE, Morrison Knundsen, Alco, Baldwin, Fairbanks Morse lash up matter?
Dynamic, non-dynamic matter?
Reasoning for question:
I remember reading an old article about the PRR and MU'ing units from the Alco & EMD causing problems because they were not compatible when MU'd. Does this problem still exist between manufacturers? Or is this just an older unit [like me] problem?
Answers, in order:
(1) Not to my knowledge
(2) Yes, for consistency. Note, though, that units bought for, say, passenger service will be limited to that service, as would yard engines and road engines.
(3) Except for Baldwin, not to my knowledge. Reason: Baldwins used a pneumatically-operated MU system, rendering them wholly incompatible with other builders' engines. That's why Baldwin consists were always "pure."
From a practical standpoint, FM diesels, especially the Trainmasters, had a deck height difference of nearly two feet between them and any other diesels.
Also, contemporary or late-model EMD will generally PUSH a GE if it's the trailing unit, something I've witnessed myself.
(4) If there's a mix of dynamic and non-dynamic units in a consist, you wouldn't be able to use the dynamic brakes on the trailing unit if your leader is a non-DB loco. This is a moot point today, as virtually all diesels built today are DB-equipped, often as "standard equipment."
