How do you get the motivation to do exercise to help with depression when you have no energy?
I know that getting exercise is good for depression and can help give you more energy. But how do you get the energy to do exercise in the first place when you have so little energy, all you feel like doing is sleeping?
That is a good question. The thing is, if you have been diagnosed with depression by a doctor, your medication should help to revive your energy levels. If you are not taking medication to treat your depression, then, like any other illness, the symptoms will remain. Perhaps you have been taking medication for a short time only, and if this is the case, you may have to be more patient until it starts to do its job properly.
What you can start trying to do is just take a short walk around the block and then come home and sit down with a cup of tea and coffee and relax. It is particularly beneficial if it is a sunny day, even if it is a bit chilly, because the sunlight is the important factor. Continue to do this until you feel you can walk around two blocks, and so on. You should feel the benefit if you do this regularly. You can always have a nap in the afternoon if you do feel sluggish.
Many people think you can just start running around and being on the top of the world, because you have been told exercise is good for depression. But you have to overcome the symptoms before you can do that, and once you have, then you can crank up the exercise levels and do even more energetic stuff!
