I've had this situation a couple times where I've gotten new furniture - once a futon mattress and now a desk chair - and they smell bad - like heavy duty mothballs or something. It's winter now so I don't want to stick the chair outside (it's leather) but the smell is giving me a headache. Anyone had this experience and found a good way to rid the smell? The futon mattress I could put some febreeze on it to help, but I don't want to spray it on leather. Does anyone know what that stink is? I read that it may be teflon, but don't know. I worry about my pets breathing it in as well because I hear that is worse for them than for people.
That wonderful NEW smell you have is formaldehyde outgassing and that is why it gives you a headache. I bet you can't shop in a department store for long either because of the same reason. It happens with fibers and new carpet and all kinds of new stuff. It take s a while for it to complete and being that you cant put it outside, there is nothing to do but wait it out. Sorry!
