I've heard that a diesel engine will outrun a comparable gasoline engine in terms of service life. This makes sense, since a diesel is mechanically simpler and requires less maintenance. However, I'm wondering how much of a difference there is. Where a gas engine might run 200-250k miles, I've heard legends of diesels running one million or more miles. On average, how much longer will a diesel engine last?
Complex question. The issue of durability hinges on many factors, including intended use and maintenance. Yes a Class 8 truck will last a million miles but this is not accurate very often. The BLOCK may have that many miles on it but usually the cylinders have been resleeved. Or new rods and mains. In frame overhauls where its the same engine but with new internals. But its possible to overload/wear out a big rig rather quickly too. Light-Medium duty diesels will last up to 500000 miles but again, Ive seen ALL the powerstroke variations wear out in less than 100k. Cummins too. Down here in Houston people like to overload the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. But to answer your question more accurately if you took a Ford F250 with gasoline V8 and an identical truck wth a powerstroke and operated both under the same loads and condtions while following the mfg's service schedule the diesel would last longer. How much longer is, again, a question of how much stress you put on the engine. And FYI- I know of some detroit diesel engnes that have run continuosly for 25 to 30 years on a tugboat. They run constanly and the owners have rigged up a bypass on the oil filters so they can chnge the oil while the engine is running.
