Why does the picture of my LCD TV darken?
When we are watching TV if the scene is dark enough, the picture darkens. For instance, if it is mostly black with just one line of white text, the white looks darker than it should. But in brighter scenes, everything is fine. It seems like like the backlight is dimming. I hope I have been clear enough. What's going on?
TVs like the 2008 Sony V, W, Z or XBR have a new feature called Advanced Contrast Enhancer. Toshiba Models 500, 510, 530, etc also have a feature called DynaLight. Both of these features adjust the back-lighting based upon the brightness of the scene. During dark scenes, they turn down the back-lighting. During bright scenes they turn up the back-lighting. If you watch the scrolling credits at the end of a movie, you can often times catch these TVs making these adjustments based upon the amount of text present on the screen.
I personally dislike these features. They wash out your blacks in bright scenes and dim the whites in dark scenes. I particularly find the adjustments intrusive when you can see the adjustments being made during the scene. The good news is that they can be disabled on the Toshiba products. The bad news is that the arrogant engineers/marketers of Sony feel that you the consumer should not have control over this feature and they do not allow you to disable the feature.
