I hear a lot of different things about how often I should polish my flute with a normal cleaning rag. Some people say every day, and others say like once a month or so. How often should I polish my flute? Does anybody know for sure?
Wipe your flute donw with a microfiber cloth every time you play - be careful that you do not dislodge any springs, etc. Swab out the inside ever time you play. PUT IT IN THE CASE - use no-tarnish strips to absorb free chemicals in the air that cause tarnish.
If your flute does tarnish, do NOT try to remove it yourself. Even the cloths that do that have a powder in them that will get into your mechanism, and invade your pads.
Because of my professional use, by flute will sit out all day on a stand, and sees the case only a night. Therefore, I need to swab less, but it does tarnish more - but I have my own methods of dealing with that - I will not disclose them here, because it is one of those "this was done by a trained driver on a closed course - do not attempt this at home" deals.
Each year, you flute f goes into the shop ( sometimes more often) for a COA - clean, oil, adjust. They can clean it there - using methods you do not have at home. One method used to involve cyanide - best left to pros!
