What will happen if the discharge of a centrifugal pump is fully closed?
Comparing to a positive displacement pump, when the discharge side is fully closed it will cause pressure built up if there is flow pumping by the pump.
Will it cause any damages to the centrifugal pump if the situation continues? (pump is still on, there is liquid inside)
You won't get the pressure spike you would get from deadheading a positive displacement pump, but the fluid in a deadheaded centrifugal pump will heat significantly; all that shaft work goes into heating the fluid. How fast the heating becomes a problem depends on the fluid.
You could get viscosity changes from heating.
Also, some centrifugal pumps can go into 'surge' with too little flow.
