what is the capacitor, resistor and diode function in this IR receiver circuit.
The capacitor is just filtering the output of 5 volts voltage regulator (7805), the input of the regulator is a square wave signal (coming from the RTS pin of the PC) serial port and not a clean dc voltage so you need a capacitor to integrate that signal.
The resistor is needed because the output of the IR receiver is "open collector" which means you need a resistor to pull the output.
The diode is needed because the signal coming from the RTS pin is +12 to -12 volts, so you need to get rid of the -12 part.
>>> Edit: I checked up the TSOP 1738 and is not a open collector device so the resistor is only optional and the capacitor is recommended only for avoiding disturbances. so I guess the RTS pin is at +12 volts by means of programming and the diode in only to avoid that, in the case the pin goes to -12 volts, e.g. reset, it destroys the components.
