I realise aluminum is a lot lighter making it weaker --- but pound for pound, which is stronger?
Hard as in rigid.
Example: Which would bend (tear) more easily -- 10 lbs. of steel or 10 lbs. of aluminum.
First, assuming by 'typical' you are referring to the most common, commercially available alloys of each, common steels tend to be stronger in the sense of being more rigid. However, there is a great deal of overlap in strength of various alloys. I would not necessarily characterise aluminum as being lighter and thus weaker. Heavy truck chassis have used aluminum for years as a lighter and equally strong substitute for steel rails.
As a whole though, this is an apples to oranges comparison. Each has many different alloys with many different properties. Factors such as fatique strength, cost, ease of fabrication, availability, and so on all are really contributing factors to material selection. There are steel alloys that are incredibly strong (i.e. 'hard', 'durable', or 'dense') but similarly aluminum alloys with similar properties. Each has its limitations though! Aluminum is not commonly used for tool steels (high strength) but is used for aircraft (high strength). Each has many underlying reasons why though.
