A piece of calcium carbide is paced into a container of water and the acetylene gas that is formed is bubbled through water into an inverted graduated cylinder. The pressure inside the graduated cylinder is 800 mmHg, and the temperature is 27 C. What is the the partial pressure exerted by the acetylene gas? The vapor pressure of water at 27 C is 27 mmHg.
Total pressure = pressure of acetylene + vapor pressure of water.
800 mm Hg = pressure of acetylene + 27 mmHg;
so pressure of acetylene = 800 - 27 = 773 mmHg.
This is important because if the volume/pressure of the water vapor is not taken into account, calculations involving the trapped gas will be inaccurate.
